Meditation as the key to rediscovering ourselves - what is the point?
In today's fast-paced world, where our minds are constantly bombarded with endless to-do lists, notifications, and external pressures, it's easy to lose sight of who we really are.
That's where meditation comes in - not as an escape, but as a tool to rediscover ourselves.
If you practice yoga or simply feel the weight of modern life, this practice can be a guide to inner peace, clarity, and self-awareness...
What is the purpose of meditation?
Meditation is more than just sitting in silence; it is a deep practice that offers the opportunity to tune into the present moment. At its core, meditation is about being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment.
In this way, we begin to remove the mental noise that often clouds our perception of ourselves and the world around us.
Through meditation, we can tap into the deeper layers of our consciousness and uncover aspects of our personality, desires, and fears that are often buried under the onslaught of everyday life.
The real purpose of meditation is not to control or eliminate thoughts but to observe them and gain a clearer picture of our inner world.
When can meditation be useful?
Meditation is beneficial in almost every aspect of life, but there are certain situations where it can bring profound relief and transformation.
1.Overcoming stress and anxiety: one of the most common reasons people turn to meditation is to manage stress and anxiety. When you're overwhelmed, meditation - even for just a few minutes - can help ground you. Simply focusing on your breath can bring you back to the present and reduce anxiety about future events or past mistakes.
2. Clarity in decision-making: Meditation can help quiet the noise that makes decision-making so challenging. By quieting the mind, you create space for clarity to arise, which helps you tune into your intuition and make decisions in accordance with it, rather than under pressure or fear.
3. Managing emotions: Meditation teaches us to observe our emotional reactions instead of letting them consume us. It allows you to witness anger, sadness, or frustration without immediately reacting to it, giving you more control over your reactions.
4. Coping with life changes: whether it's a career change, the end of a relationship, or adjusting to parenthood, life changes can leave us feeling lost. Meditation can help you connect with your inner self and provide stability in times of uncertainty.
Examples of transformation through meditation from life
Petra's journey through grief: After losing a loved one, Petra felt emotionally overwhelmed and disconnected from herself. Grief consumed her and she struggled to find meaning in her life. Through regular meditation practice, Petra learned to process her grief in a healthy way. By sitting with her emotions and observing them without judgment, she found comfort in the quiet moments. Meditation became a space for her to fully experience her emotions without getting lost in them, which ultimately allowed her to move on with a sense of peace and acceptance.
Mark's journey to creativity: Mark was a successful graphic designer who felt burnt out and uninspired. Every project felt like an obligation and he doubted his passion for the craft. When Marek incorporated 10 minutes of meditation into his daily routine, he noticed a change. His mind, no longer overwhelmed by distractions, became a breeding ground for creativity. During meditation, he began to experience moments of clarity where new ideas and perspectives on his projects emerged effortlessly.
Ema Relieves Stress: Ema, a working mother of two, struggled with the constant stress of balancing work, family, and personal responsibilities. She often felt she was in survival mode. After trying various stress management techniques, she decided to try meditation. At first, she was uncomfortable sitting in silence, but as time went on, she began to notice small shifts. She became more patient with her children, less reactive in tense situations at work, and more aware of her own needs. Meditation didn't relieve her of stress, but it gave her the tools to deal with it with greater ease.
And how to get started with meditation? I've listed a few tips...
1.Start small: You don't have to meditate for hours to see the benefits. Even just 5-10 minutes a day can make a noticeable difference. Once you enjoy meditating, you can gradually lengthen it.
2. Find a comfortable position: If you're uncomfortable, you don't have to sit cross-legged on the floor. Sit on a chair, lie down or even stand if it feels better. The important thing is to be in a position where you can relax without falling asleep.
3. Focus on your breath: In meditation, your breath is the anchor. Concentrate on the feeling of the air going in and out of your nostrils, or the rising and falling of your chest. If your mind wanders (and it will), gently focus back on the breath without getting upset.
4. Use guided meditations: If you find sitting in silence daunting, try using a meditation app or guided video. This will help you stay focused and offer a structured practice.
5. Be patient: Meditation is not about getting instant results. It's a practice, which means the more often you engage in it, the more benefits you'll see over time. Some days will seem easier than others, and that's perfectly normal.
Motivation to start meditating
If you are still hesitant about whether meditation is worth your time, remember this: you are investing in yourself.
The world around you will always be full of distractions, challenges, and obligations. However, meditation provides a unique opportunity to come back to yourself, to reconnect with the person you are under the weight of everyday stress and societal expectations.
When you meditate, you permit yourself to simply be - to exist without the need to fix, change, or achieve anything in the moment. This simple act of being can be deeply healing and help you remember who you are at your core.
Once you reconnect with yourself, you will be better prepared to handle life's ups and downs with grace and resilience.
Incorporating meditation into your life isn't about becoming a different person - it's about rediscovering the person you've always been. You don't have to change the external circumstances of your life to feel calmer or more centered. All the peace, clarity, and fulfillment you seek is already within you - meditation will only help you get there.
So why not give it a try? Your mind, body, and soul will thank you.
Are you an active person who practices daily meditation? Do you notice a greater quality of life? What benefits does it bring in conjunction with yoga?
